The grand katholikon within the monastery walls is by no means the only chapel on Mount Menoikeion. Dozens of smaller chapels can be found scattered upon the mountain landscape. These chapels work together to claim the entire mountain as sacred geography. One of our primary research objectives in the last several season has been to study and analyze these chapels and their frescos. Some of these endangered paintings may hold missing piieces to the puzzles of post-Byzantine art history.
